My name is Robyn Brophy. I have a Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Bishop's University. An avid baker, I also have experience working with children and young adults with learning disabilities. For the last two years, I have been living in Edinburgh Scotland and working for a Social Enterprise called Assist Social Capital. I have spent my time learning about social firms and enterprises and studied the most effective ways to promote social change. I am moving back this summer to bring what I have learned to Canadian Society.
I have successfully run a great deal of projects and fundraisers and believe that I am a natural leader. I am a passionate, hard worker who is always ready to develop and learn more.
Business Description:
My dream business is to start a bakery called “The Nest” that acts as a social firm where 75% of it’s employees are adults with learning disabilities. Employed for three-year contracts, they will be take part in a training and work program providing them with the skills and experience they need to continue a sustainable working life. The program will allow them to work up through three different levels of competitive pay and positions within the bakery. The Nest’s main focus will be integrating them into the working community.
The bakery will sell home-style baked goods like cupcakes, pies and cookies and create an environment much like grandmother’s kitchen. Success will be earned with hard work happening right in front of the eyes of our customers, creating a wonderful experience out of the simple act of buying a cake. Our workers will be able to take ownership of their work and be proud of what they accomplish.
The location will have full handicapped access and be built to create a stimulating work -environment catered to special needs. The Nest will be a work place with a warm, inclusive and patient atmosphere that will create not only a delicious but a good experience for all in front and behind the counter.
In the interest of starting simple this is only one of the many ways that ‘The Nest” will bring positive social activity to the community.
It’s about time that we get this going!
